چکیده

We use two new hydrodynamical simulations of cold dark matter ( CDM) and f(R) gravity to test the methodology used by Wilcox et al. (W15) in constraining the effects of a fifth force on the profiles of clusters of galaxies. We construct realistic simulated stacked weak lensing and X-ray surface brightness cluster profiles from these cosmological simulations, and then use these data projected along various lines of sight to test the spherical symmetry of our stacking procedure. We also test the applicability of the NFW profile to model weak lensing profiles of clusters in f(R) gravity. Finally, we test the validity of the analytical model developed in W15 against the simulated profiles. Overall, we find our methodology is robust and broadly agrees with these simulated data. We also apply our full Markov Chain Monte Carlo analysis from W15 to our simulated X-ray and lensing profiles, providing consistent constraints on the modified gravity parameters as obtained from the real cluster data, e.g. for our CDM simulation we obtain |fR0| < 8.3 × 10−5 (95 per cent CL), which is in good agreement with the W15 measurement of |fR0| < 6 × 10−5. Overall, these tests confirm the power of our methodology which can now be applied to larger cluster samples available with the next generation surveys.

Cluster abundance in fðRÞ gravity models

As one of the most powerful probes of cosmological structure formation, the abundance of massive galaxy clusters is a sensitive probe of modifications to gravity on cosmological scales. In this paper, we present results from N-body simulations of a general class of fðRÞ models, which self-consistently solve the nonlinear field equation for the enhanced forces. Within this class we vary the ampl...

COSMOLOGICAL IMPLICATIONS OF MODIFIED GRAVITY: SPHERICAL COLLAPSE AND HIGHER ORDER CORRELATIONS Alexander Borisov Bhuvnesh Jain In the Standard Model of Cosmology the nature of the Dark Energy has become one of the most significant and conceptual challenges to be resolved. Unscreening Modified Gravity in the Matter Power Spectrum.

Viable modifications of gravity that may produce cosmic acceleration need to be screened in high-density regions such as the Solar System, where general relativity is well tested. Screening mechanisms also prevent strong anomalies in the large-scale structure and limit the constraints that can be inferred on these gravity models from cosmology. We find that by suppressing the contribution of th...

Tests of chameleon gravity

Theories of modified gravity, where light scalars with non-trivial self-interactions and non-minimal couplings to matter-chameleon and symmetron theories-dynamically suppress deviations from general relativity in the solar system. On other scales, the environmental nature of the screening means that such scalars may be relevant. The highly-nonlinear nature of screening mechanisms means that the...

Beyond the Chameleon Mechanism

As a result of non-linear self-interactions, in chameleon theories where the field couples to matter much more strongly than gravity does, the fifth force between two bodies with thinshell is independent of their coupling to the field. As a consequence the bounds on the coupling coming from terrestrial tests of gravity, measurements of the Casimir force and those constraints imposed by the phys...
